The end of the 90's: the constantly repeated templates in house music
made the leaders of the scene to think about the future of this 4/4 genre.
Labels, djs and producers decided it is time to reform the boring house scene. The effect of the 'renewing' movement has been the the ever-changing subgenre - the progressive house.
Keyword: COMPLEXITY.
What we call progressive house
nowadays is much more complex than ever. Its main characterics is the slow building of different soundlayers and the never-heard, creative audio solutions. It can integrate all electronic music subgenres - progressive producers often use different sound-elements from other genres.
While the main characteristics of minimalist electronic music is using just a few harmonic or disharmonic soundwaves, clicks and pops, smooth kickdrums, the classic progressive sound

may include sound-layers on even 32+ more channels at the same time.
This genre is truly dance-oriented which often uses influences from tribal, trance, electro and even breakbeat.

Progressive producers often ignore the typical 'four on the floor' 4/4 schema, making unique sequences of bassdrums, claps, hi-hats and percussions.
This can give a greater accent to the groove.
Atmospheric pads fading in and out, emotional melodies, ethnic percussions, punchy basslines plus 4/4 kick...
A little Heaven, isn't it?
If you could mute the drum and bass channels of a progressive track and you could slow it down a bit, you would often get a nice ambient/ chillout track.
But it is a different story now :)...
